What is Happening to the Trolls Fandom?

Do you guys remember what Bruce said after he mentioned the word burger? 🍔

These were the exact same words that I said to myself when one of my online friends on Tumblr told me that more and more people were leaving the Trolls fandom.

After thinking quite a bit about this, I started to noticed it more too. In fact, I did noticed that some people I know had got into different fandoms lately, especially on Instagram. Now I will inform you that I'm totally not against this because I believe that everyone can be into other fandoms too.

(Hehehe, me with The Amazing World of Gumball.) 🤣🤣

Soon enough, there were some people I knew who left the fandom completely, which I can understand since we haven't heard any news from Dreamworks about anything Trolls-related content. Not even a holiday special or TV series, which had been almost TWO FREAKING YEARS!!! TWO!?! LIKE DREAMWORKS...WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!

Ahem, anyways, today I'm hoping to discuss what's going on with this fandom and why they are losing much attention and my opinion on why people might be deciding to go into a different fandom or leaving it completely.

How the attention skyrocketed in the first place in 2023?

Ah, such great memories!

When Trolls Band Together's very first trailer was released on March 28, 2023, I remember feeling super excited about it. I couldn't stop talking about it and I watched the trailer a few more times on the same day it was released.

As the months came by, Dreamworks released bits of images from the movie, which I had seen some on Pinterest. On July 30th 2023, I joined Wattpad and met so many people (including ones who I talk to till this day) who were excited for this movie to come out, which was how I really got into the fandom.

More TV spot clips came out on YouTube, which got pretty much us Trolls fans on Wattpad excited, especially the clip when BroZone were performing "Better Place" at America's Got Talent Show.

I remembered squealing so loudly when I saw Branch and his brothers. I was literally the only one in my family who got excited about them, screaming like a total fangirl and was falling in love with this boy band, especially Floyd. And when Branch blew that kiss, I went insane! Like squealing loudly. I still love watching this clip till this day.

So although I didn't have social media at the time, I was pretty much getting the scoop from some of my Wattpad followers who had been researching for more Trolls content and were pretty much telling me a lot of things. We couldn't stop talking about it, making predictions and theories about what could happen in the movie.

I start to notice that they were a lot of Trolls fanfic stories on Wattpad, which were getting lots of views, including my very first fanfic story BroZone Camping Trip. I couldn't believe how much people love the fandom. It was exciting to see people get involved and seeing their comments on how excited they were for this movie. So when the movie finally released, it was literally the best time ever. The Trolls content kept going, people were into it and this fandom had a lot of attention.

Later on, new Trolls merch were starting to come out, including the Trolls Mineez toys, which they were super adorable! I LOVED them and had to get some. It brought in more excitement, and they were selling like hot cakes. This movie had got some attention, and they were going strong, especially for us Wattpad writers and readers.

So when I finally got Instagram in 2024, that is when I noticed how much people really enjoyed the franchise and I seen so much fanart of them, including Broppy, Cliva, and BroZone mostly. It was no wonder there was so much hype about them. It was amazing!

So What Happened?

Around halfway through 2024, I noticed that the attention that the Trolls fandom was receiving was slowly decreasing, which I didn't notice at first. Then some of my followers on Wattpad got into different fandoms, including one of my closest online friend Candy who was on Wattpad at the time and she left the fandom completely later on. There were some who lost motivation to write Trolls fanfic stories and some who completely left the fandom. To be honest, I was a bit sad to see people who I knew leave this fandom, but I understood and respected their decision.

Then I noticed that I was getting less views on one of my stories Trolls: BroZone Oneshots on Wattpad, which I thought it was because I wasn't really consistent with publishing my stories often, which was true due to the writer's block and lack of motivation to finish them, so I took a long break from writing.

Other than that, it was the fact that there weren't much Trolls content from Dreamworks. They didn't even mention anything about a holiday special or something like a TV series, which it had been almost two years now. Every one year, Dreamworks would release a holiday special for the Trolls, which they did a year after the first movie and then a year after the 2nd movie. So yes, I did expect a holiday a year after Trolls Band Together, but it didn't happen. In my opinion, I think this is one of the reasons why the Trolls fandom's attention is slowly decreasing.

At first, I thought it was due to the Justin Timberlake incident that happened back in June or July 2024, which went viral for a while, including some fanart of Branch in a mugshot on Instagram. But then I thought it was due to the animation, but I really don't know why to be honest. But the point is that we have been waiting for so long and so far, we haven't gotten any news about a holiday special or something. I think we are all getting impatient over here.

Fun Fair Surprise (It was SURPRISING)!!

Trolls: Fun Fair Surprise (TV Series 2024- ) - Episode list - IMDb

When Dreamworks announced that they were doing Trolls: Fun Fair Surprise episodes on YouTube back in September 2024, I got pretty excited, along with a few of my online friends I knew on Instagram and on Wattpad. Some people doubt weren't too sure about it. And before Dreamworks announced this, they released the Trolls Mineez for it, which was two months before and it did include John Dory and Floyd in their Mineez version. I couldn't stop talking about this mini series and I've been seeing such beautiful fanart of this.

And of course, I had a few expectations; however, none of them came true. There were mixed opinions about this mini series. Some people liked it and some people didn't due to the animation, I got to admit, I was a bit disappointed that I didn't see much Broppy moments to not seeing some of those cute designs that they did to the Mineez for this mini series.

Most of all, Branch's brothers didn't even show up. Not even once. But hey, seeing Branch, Poppy, Viva, and Tiny Diamond was good enough, plus it was funny too. I also enjoyed the songs and the episodes were fun to watch while also getting some references too.

What is your favorite episode from this series?

But what really shocked me was when in their last episode "A Star is Born", Poppy called Branch her bestie. I get that they were trying to make it "kid-friendly" for kids, but we also got some teen and adult Trolls fans here. In my opinion, I think that kind of turned some Trolls fans off. I remembered reading some comments on YouTube that people were definitely upset, and some had left the fandom due to this, and some of them left during the time when the first few episodes released on YouTube.

After the show ended on April 26, 2025, I think this is when things slowly start to go downhill for the Trolls fandom. More people were leaving the fandom and getting into different fandoms to the point where they say that this fandom is either "slowly dying" or "it's dead". I know that this may sound harsh, especially when you are a Trolls fan hearing these words, but it's the sad truth...or is it's not?

I believe that this fandom isn't dead. To me, it just not getting as much attention as it did before. There are still some Trolls fans out there who love to rewatch movies and read fanfic stories about them. It's still alive and you are making a difference.

I believe that there are ways that we can support this fandom and keep the momentum going, keeping it alive and to find others to share our interests with the fandom:

Writing Fanfic Stories

Writing stories about the Trolls is a great way to keep this fandom going, even when I have small views on it. What really matters is what makes you happy. Do you enjoy writing them? If so, you should do it, even when you're new to writing fanfics. Highly recommend it. By writing stories, you can inspire others and they can read something that you wrote when it comes to Trolls.

And if there was something in the franchise that you wish existed, why not write about it? And getting it publish too? I'll say go for it! There are people out there who would want to read stories like these.

Fanart

If you love to draw, making fanart is a great way to keep you motivated and doing something that you love. And if you have social media, posting your fanart is a fun way to inspire others too and who knows, they might come back into Trolls.

Rewatching the Trolls Series

Watching the Trolls series like The Beat Goes On and Trollstopia is a lot of fun! Laughing at moments from your favorite characters, even at Branch moments are fun! And why not give Fun Fair Surprise a try?

Getting into a Trolls Community

Finding a Trolls community to join is also a great way to still get into the fandom. You can meet people who are also into Trolls too. Finding a Trolls discord server on Disboard, or be in a Trolls community on Tumblr, or even making your own club is a great idea. Here are some Trolls Discord servers that you can find on Disboard.

What Now?

So you may be thinking: What now? What will happen to this fandom? What can we expect from it? When will a holiday special be? Should I leave this fandom for good?

Here is one thing I should tell you: Don't give up hope. I know it may be tempting just to leave the fandom and forget about the joy you felt when it came to this fandom. Don't give up hope. Patience is the key. I believe that we will get some more content from the Trolls fandom. We just have to be patient. I mean who knows, they may be working on something right now.

Although Fun Fair Surprise ended and everyone had different opinions about it, what really matters is that Dreamworks did release something Trolls-related, even when it didn't seem much. It was a grateful thing that they did.

So yes, the Trolls fandom still exists. And it's totally okay to get into different fandoms too. Don't worry, you are not abandoning them. You can still like Trolls and be into another fandom. And it's also okay to get into a different fandom while we wait for some news from the Trolls content. You can find a balance, plus it's your choice whether you want to get into a different fandom or not.

Ex. I've been into The Amazing World of Gumball lately, but still love Trolls

I believe that some fandoms go through the stage of being popular and then they get less attention while some stayed being well-known and popular. Like every time they release a new Trolls content, it becomes popular again and goes back down again. It's just going through a phase of ups and downs when it comes to getting attention, but no matter what we as Trolls fans will always love them.

And this is one of the reasons why I created this blog. To build a community filled with Trolls fans like you, so I hope that we can share our love of Trolls and keep this fandom alive by supporting it and creating something about it to inspire others and who knows, they might get into the fandom too. And by then, I hope that Dreamworks will make something about the Trolls....

Like a TV series, which I heard that it's a rumor that they might make a series, which I have heard from a few of my online friends though it's not confirmed. Although a rumor, I hope we will get some content soon.

So what got you into the fandom? What are your thoughts about this? Comment below!

  1. I never knew there was a Trolls fandom until after I saw TBT! I had always loved Trolls since I saw the first movie in cinemas. I only found out about the fandom when I saw fanfics about Trolls Band Together on Wattpad. I remember reading fanfics like the Brozone Camping Trip and laughing so hard but also getting emotional seeing the brothers care for each other like a family. I'm pretty close with my brother and I loved seeing them be like actual siblings who sometimes argue but in the end they always have each others' backs. It's a shame that people think that the Trolls fandom is dead because there are so many things I love about it. I'll keep writing fanfics and drawing art of them because Trolls will always be one of my favourite fandoms (next to Spongebob!)

  4. I don't think the troll fandom is dead, but it just isn't getting as much attention as it did when the third movie came out. I've loved trolls since I was a kid, I basically grew up watching them, and I only found out that there was a fandom when the second movie came out. I only started participating in the community this year precisely because I realized that the fandom wasn't as active anymore, and seeing so many different artists and writers talking about their love for this franchise encouraged me to try to help keep this fandom alive. As you said, patience is key right now. And if everyone helps in their own way, this community will stay alive. I've never written any fanfics or created any AUs, but YOU were one of the biggest incentives for me to start and I couldn't be happier! I feel like I'm reliving all the happiness of joining the fandom for the first time, and it's amazing to see people like you show so much love for this community and continue to make amazing projects! And it's always about what makes us happy, so if the community isn't at its best, that's okay. The important thing is that you do what you like and love :)

    1. Oh my gosh, this what you wrote is so true and beautiful. I’m glad to know that I inspired you and I hope that we continue to do what we love and we will always love this fandom dearly.

  5. Hey, it’s me, I went back and reread this blog, and you’re right, it’s really frustrating that people are giving up on the fandom so quickly. I’m not saying it’s a problem to have other interests, look at me! I’ve been binging on SpongeBob SquarePants and Fairly Oddparents lately, but I still love Trolls deeply and hope for the best. People can have other interests, but they shouldn’t be giving up this easily. They need to remember that this series’ target audience is kids, and they shouldn’t be trying so hard to please people that could potentially leave within a month, it doesn’t revolve around them, it’s fans of all ages.
